With the advent of the internet it became incredibly easy to spread misinformation. Rumors have the ability to spread across the globe in minutes, and not everyone researches everything they read about and they just take it for fact. 

In my Adsense research I have found so many  myths that have been spread about the Adsense program and I think its necessary to address at least a few of these myths. Below are the top five I will focus on today.

Adsense Myth #1

In order to earn more revenus from Adsense my traffic will need to increase.

The reality:

Believing that an increase in website traffic guarantees fmore earnings is a mistake you need to avoid. Although this may be true to some extent, there is never a guarantee that the increase in traffic will result in people clicking your ads. High traffic helps, but please, please do not focus all of your energy here. You need to look at the Adsense program as a whole and utilize the tools if you want to increase your earnings. In fact, just by changing a few ads and their placement, you can increase your earnings with your current traffic just the way it is.

Adsense Myth #2

The Google Adsense program will only earn you pennies not dollars.

The reality:

I am sorry but this is the most ridiculous one, yet persists to this day. There are many examples of people ( websites ) that earn thousand of dollars a month. Just google ” Markus Frind, he is the founder of “Plenty of Fish”. There are even pictures of his official Google check for hunderds of thousands of dolloars over a 2 month period. There are more documented cases on the internet as well, some memorable ones are:

Freeweblayouts.net, they say they make 100,000 a month from Adsense

Askthebuilder.com estimates an average of 1400 per day, thats $42000 a month.

Adsense Myth #3

If a placement does well, leave it, it will always do well.

The reality:

There is always room for improvement. Its as simple as that. I am not saying to continually change your placements, I am saying dont be afraid to experiment. One of your biggest educational tools that you can use as you improve is via trail and error. So never become complacent, its an easy trap to fall into.

Adsense Myth #4

The more repeat visitors the better. They will ensure a stable income.

The reality:

Repeat visitors are great! They show that your site has value and they trust you. So why doesnt that roll into my Adsense earnings? Well, after several visits to a site most people are able to dicern the content from the ads and tend to become “blind” to everything but content. So its important to have a steady stream of newbies as well, this ensures the blindness only occurs for a portion of your visitors.

Adsense Myth #5

The big earners from Adsense must have huge sites with hundreds of thousands of visitors everyday to really make the big bucks.

The reality:

Thousands of people right now have everything from several websites, to one big website. They all make good money from Google. This program has been so popular because of the real potential for the small guy to make it online. I am proof of that.

So you have made the decision to at least partially monetize your site with Google Adsense. Great decision!

You sign up, get approved and start creating the formats that you have decided on ( using my Adsense Overdrive report hopefully, you can get it here if you havent already got your copy ). Everything goes smoothly, until you visit your site. There are ads for your main competitor staring right back at you from your own pages. You are effectively providing a place for your competitor to take your business away, and right on your very own site. This is not good, it is bad, very very bad. You need to prevent this from happening, and you cant believe google would do this to you. But its not Googles fault. They identified this as a concern early on and provide a way for you to prevent it from happening. It is called the competitive ad filter. It allows you to prevent your competitors ads from showing up on your site.

Here is what Google has to say about the program (from Googles Adsense Help pages):

“The competitive ad filter works by blocking ads that link to specific URLs. This way, you can easily block all ads that are linked to your competitor at www.example.com. By entering a top level domain such as www.example.com, you’ll also block all ads that link to subdirectories below that domain. The following rules apply to the competitive ad filter:

• Entering example.com will block ads to example.com and example.com/sub
• Entering example.com will also block ads to www.example.com and forums.example.com
• www.example.com will block ads to www.example.com but not to forums.example.com or example.com
• example.com/sub will not block ads to example.com/products or example.com/sub/index.html

Generally, it’s a good idea to leave the ‘www’ off of URLs in your filter list to provide for broader filtering.”

So you can see that everything you need is right there. They even include a tutorial with step by step instructions to set this up. They have made it very easy for you to prevent your competitors from gaining and advantage over you, now lets hope your competitor hasn’t read this post as well and you can reap the rewards so to speak.

Should you be using Adsense Channels to analyze results? I think so. Heres why.

Web surfers are a particularly fickle bunch. Look at banners as an example. Thye became so prolific, flashy, and over staurated that consumers stopped clicking, not entirely, but considerably less so than when they were first introduced. What happened? Surfers realized that they were sales pitches, and that some were not very useful and they began to not even notice them. It was like they were not even there.

This trend was not noticed fully at first, it was not tracked like we see today. Google addresses this issue with their Adsense channels. You will fully be able to watch which type of ad is doing well and which is not, you can experiment with placement, format and colors to see what results come out better. 

Google Adsense help says “Any time you make changes to your site, take advantage of channels to measure and observe the effects. Whether you want to track a specific type of ad placement or an entire site, custom and URL channels will help you determine what’ll be most successful.” I have to agree with them. I have used channels to successfully increase click through on several occasions and now consider it to be a major part of my tool box.

One occasion that should always involve the use of Adsense channels is when implementing one fo Googles Adsense Optimization tips. Again, from Googles Adsense help, they say : “Testing will also help you make smart decisions about your ads. If you’re considering implementing one of our other optimization tips, we encourage you to test it out with channels. The more you test, the better you know the effects of the ads. The better you know the effects of the ads, the faster you’ll realize your revenue potential.”

I agree with these tips and encourage you to use them to your advantage when utililizing the Adsense program. Not only will they help you understand your traffic even better, but it ultimately shows you exactly what your traffic wants.

Surely you’ve seen the countless Adsense “gurus” claiming to make thousands of dollars in a short amount of time with Google Adsense. It’s no secret, people are making a fortune with Google Adsense, and some of these people are making so much money that it’s the only thing they even bother working on these days.

Can a simple company save us from economic disaster? Many think it can.

Here’s why.

If you think about the internet as a restaurant, not a fast food joint, but a real restaurant where you go in, someone greets and seats you and you are prepared to spend a bit of money.  If you think of it in that way and then think about what you are seeing in the news about the economy, lost jobs, outsourcing etc. Wouldn’t you expect that restaurant to be empty? You certainly wouldn’t think it should have a line and waitlist now would you?

But thats whats happening, right here, right now. People are still moving to the internet as a source of income, and their income is increasing…even in the middle of a recession. Most other “restaurants” or business sectors are showing signs of pain. Not Google or should I say those that “contract out” to Google. Everyday new sites pop up that include Adsense as part of their overal  monetization plan, businesses continue to market their goods gaining an ever wider reach and increased sales as a result. Do a simple search for Adsense ready websites and you will find plenty of matches. Adsense has opened the doors to a whole new industry of entrepreneurs and a generation of young people that have learned to think out of the box.

The internet is still in its infancy and shows no sign of slowing down or adjusting to any economic downturns. Alot of people recognize this, and they will beat the majority of us to the punch by acting on it. So here I sit. Checking Adsense earnings, doing some proofreading of a few new pages and seriously thinking about outsourcing. Yeah, I am serious. Its not that I am overwhelmed, but there is a better way. Or is there?

I have signed up for a trial period with an Indian Outsourcing company ( name to be released at a later date). They are creating articles, submitting the articles, writing press releases and your general everyday web site promotion.

I signed up on Friday and heard back from my “project manager” on Saturday so far so good. Given the time differences I would expect a bit of a lag. Here is where the first “irritation” comes in though. I responded to the first email, which was an introduction, a few initial tips and an SEO report with a to do list that I should start on right away. The SEO report came as an attachment  on their websites project page, it did not come through on the email. So I attempted to unzip the report and get started right away. I was excited and eager to see what they thought I should change, add, etc. I also had the free time to do so.

The attachment would not open though. I tried different ways, and downloaded it several more times, all without success. So I responded to the original post from the project manager, hoping to hear back right away. I didn’t. I then opened an “urgent” ticket thinking this would get immediate attention. It hasn’t, I still don’t have the report and we are almost 24 hours later. There are obviously a number of possibilities here, such as the weekend, time zones, the terror attack on their country. All of these very valid reasons, I would just like to be informed.

This is why I am not saying names at this point, I think it is always best to go with the benefit of the doubt before venting furiously (well most times anyway, lol). However, eventually I do plan to talk openly about the company and the results I achieve, the time I saved and if it was worth it. Blindly Following Advice

Many webmasters follow certain AdSense “gurus” blindly, taking their advice as law. The problem with this is that the gurus can only give you broad, general advice. Their solutions can’t possibly take into account every factor and every situation.

I’m not saying their advice isn’t good. Most AdSense gurus tend to give advice based on their own experiences, and it probably works out just fine for them. But it’s not necessarily going to work out well for you. It might, so you should certainly test out their techniques.

Just remember not to blindly follow that advice, expecting it will work for you. Maybe Guru X does have a 25% CTR and maybe Guru Z makes $15,000 a month from AdSense alone, but it’s not practical to follow their advice without testing.

Another major reason you should never follow advice blindly is the fact that some advice is just dangerous. Just because someone is considered an AdSense expert doesn’t mean their advice will always be the right advice, especially when it comes to things that could get you banned.

For example, Joel Comm is widely considered to be one of the world’s experts on AdSense. He put out an eBook about it that was very successful, and then he released a print book called “The AdSense Code” which became quite popular.

Some of the tactics in the book became outdated very quickly. For example, Joel advocated certain tactics for drawing attention to ads that Google later said they didn’t like. This wasn’t Joel’s fault, and the information was great at the time, but anyone blindly following this advice now would be at risk for having their account banned.

Since the AdSense TOS can change at any time, you should always be sure to check out any advice you’re given thoroughly. Read the terms regularly, keep an eye on the official Google AdSense blog, and be very careful to ensure you’re always following the rules.

If you have any questions about a particular tactic and whether or not Google would find it acceptable, you can always just contact them and ask. They would be happy to let you know whether a tactic is acceptable.

Just remember, do NOT put an example live on the web. Some Google reps are rumored to be a bit overzealous, so it’s best to send them a screenshot image and not a live example.

Here is another mistake to avoid at all cost when dealing with Googles Adsense program. You may see this every now and then when doing your research and lookig for the latest in Adsense tips and tricks. It is a fatal mistake when discovered by Google and is clearly outlined on their site.

Sharing Information About Your Statistics

This is a big mistake that I see far too many people making, and it has the potential to get you banned from AdSense permanently. You’ve probably seen this yourself, and maybe you’ve even done it.

This isn’t exactly common sense. It requires you to read the AdSense TOS carefully to even realize this isn’t allowed. Most people wouldn’t think twice about being able to discuss their statistics with other webmasters. But for some reason, AdSense disallows this.

From the current Google AdSense TOS:

Confidentiality. You agree not to disclose Google Confidential Information without Google’s prior written consent. “Google Confidential Information” includes without limitation: (a) all Google software, technology, programming, specifications, materials, guidelines and documentation relating to the Program; (b) click-through rates or other statistics relating to Property performance in the Program provided to You by Google; and (c) any other information designated in writing by Google as “Confidential” or an equivalent designation.

However, You may accurately disclose the amount of Google’s gross payments to You pursuant to the Program. Google Confidential Information does not include information that has become publicly known through no breach by You or Google, or information that has been (i) independently developed without access to Google Confidential Information, as evidenced in writing; (ii) rightfully received by You from a third party; or (iii) required to be disclosed by law or by a governmental authority.

As you can see, Google does not allow you to disclose any information about your CTR, but you are allowed to discuss your gross payments. Basically, you can reveal your number of impressions, and how much you were paid. You can’t discuss anything related to your CTR.

If you must discuss your CTR with others, you should discuss it in terms of saying things like, “My CTR is well under double digits, and I’m seeking to improve it.” Don’t give exact numbers or ranges. You don’t want to risk your account, and the AdSense rules aren’t terribly clear about what you can and can’t discuss.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Your traffic statistics are your own, so you can discuss impressions. The amount you are paid is specifically allowed to be discussed in the terms. Anything else should be considered off limits just to be on the safe side.

Dont make a mistake that could get your Adsense account (and the money in it) deleted!

The Google AdSense ads, though, are nothing like those old banner ads. AdSense ads are customizable. They are less intrusive and they allow you more control so you can make them become a part of your website and not a distraction.

AdSense ads can be text, image or video. They are content related, which means Google uses a special system to ensure that the ads placed on your website are related to the content on your site. This allows you to have AdSense ads that will be of interest to people visiting your website. Google AdSense works best on a content loaded website. In order to make the most money possible with AdSense you have

to build a good website. A website alone, though, is not going to help you make some good money with AdSense…..

In addition to my regular Mon-Fri, I also have a Part Time job. I have a few websites online that provide me with a few extra bucks every month. I could probably quit my day job and concentrate on the online stuff and do just fine, but why? I’d ratther have the freedom to experiment online, as well has the overall combined income and the knowledge that I do not need to rely on either source completely. Somehow even though I have a Mon-Fri, I still have freedom. Do my boss and coworkers really need to know that rather than work on the report that is due at 9am, I spent the afternoon by the pool. The report still gets done, I just do it on my schedule whenever I felt like it. It was ready to go at 9am. After all that was the actual expectation, get the report done by 9am. There was no expectation that I do it at a certain time just that I delivered as requested.
