Can a simple company save us from economic disaster? Many think it can.

Here’s why.

If you think about the internet as a restaurant, not a fast food joint, but a real restaurant where you go in, someone greets and seats you and you are prepared to spend a bit of money.  If you think of it in that way and then think about what you are seeing in the news about the economy, lost jobs, outsourcing etc. Wouldn’t you expect that restaurant to be empty? You certainly wouldn’t think it should have a line and waitlist now would you?

But thats whats happening, right here, right now. People are still moving to the internet as a source of income, and their income is increasing…even in the middle of a recession. Most other “restaurants” or business sectors are showing signs of pain. Not Google or should I say those that “contract out” to Google. Everyday new sites pop up that include Adsense as part of their overal  monetization plan, businesses continue to market their goods gaining an ever wider reach and increased sales as a result. Do a simple search for Adsense ready websites and you will find plenty of matches. Adsense has opened the doors to a whole new industry of entrepreneurs and a generation of young people that have learned to think out of the box.

So here I sit. Checking Adsense earnings, doing some proofreading of a few new pages and seriously thinking about outsourcing. Yeah, I am serious. Its not that I am overwhelmed, but there is a better way. Or is there?

I have signed up for a trial period with an Indian Outsourcing company ( name to be released at a later date). They are creating articles, submitting the articles, writing press releases and your general everyday web site promotion.

I signed up on Friday and heard back from my “project manager” on Saturday so far so good. Given the time differences I would expect a bit of a lag. Here is where the first “irritation” comes in though. I responded to the first email, which was an introduction, a few initial tips and an SEO report with a to do list that I should start on right away. The SEO report came as an attachment  on their websites project page, it did not come through on the email. So I attempted to unzip the report and get started right away. I was excited and eager to see what they thought I should change, add, etc. I also had the free time to do so.

The attachment would not open though. I tried different ways, and downloaded it several more times, all without success. So I responded to the original post from the project manager, hoping to hear back right away. I didn’t. I then opened an “urgent” ticket thinking this would get immediate attention. It hasn’t, I still don’t have the report and we are almost 24 hours later. There are obviously a number of possibilities here, such as the weekend, time zones, the terror attack on their country. All of these very valid reasons, I would just like to be informed.

This is why I am not saying names at this point, I think it is always best to go with the benefit of the doubt before venting furiously (well most times anyway, lol). However, eventually I do plan to talk openly about the company and the results I achieve, the time I saved and if it was worth it. I recently quit smoking! Yeah!

After 25 years of smoking ( 20 of which have been really fulltime ) I finally took the leap. I am using a drug called Champix here in Canada, I think its Chantix in the USA. This drug seems to have the abilty to rob all pleasure that one gets from smoking a cigarette. On occasion I have even felt nauseous after smoking.

I know those of you that have never taken up the habit are probably shaking their heads over the pleasure comment, how can one really get pleasure from a cigarette you may ask. Well I certainly cannot explain the scientifics of it, but I do know that I enjoyed smoking, in fact I really really liked it. I liked the little rituals that happen prior to lighting up, I liked the morning headrush, I liked the escape it gave me. I liked the social part, especially over the last few years as anti smoking campaigns began to really demonize the habit and smokers banded together. But..I definitely do not miss the 7-8 dollars a day I spent on them, or the thought that always lurks as your last pack gets low, should I go get more? will I make it through the night?? Is there enough to at least have one, preferably 2 for the morning? this was stess and addiction at its finest. Imagine being so worried about your supply of death sticks, it boggles my mind now as I type this. How stupid of me for falling for all this.

I truly am glad that I can now call myself a non-smoker. Fo those of you still smoking, your time will come just always keep the thought ready and at the forefront. Ask your self everyday if today is the day you take action. Soon enough you too will be breathing easier.

I took the drug for 2 weeks ( will be on it overall for 3 months) while I continued to smoke, over the weeks the desire became less and less and I went from smoking a pack a day to half a pack. On day 14, I decided to BUTT OUT. That day was a bit difficult and I did smoke 4 cigarettes, still a success compared to the 20 I would have normally smoked. The next day I smoked 2 and on Sunday I had my final cigarette…EVER!

It is now Friday morning here and I have been smoke free (cigarette smoke anyway :-)) for 12 full days and onto my 13th. I am still craving cigarettes although I think it is more about the habit than an actual craving. I feel good, I can breathe easier, sleep better, have more energy and am even starting to get my sense of taste and smell back. Its weird to all of a sudden realize that my toothpaste tastes really good!

Blindly Following Advice

Many webmasters follow certain AdSense “gurus” blindly, taking their advice as law. The problem with this is that the gurus can only give you broad, general advice. Their solutions can’t possibly take into account every factor and every situation.

I’m not saying their advice isn’t good. Most AdSense gurus tend to give advice based on their own experiences, and it probably works out just fine for them. But it’s not necessarily going to work out well for you. It might, so you should certainly test out their techniques.

Just remember not to blindly follow that advice, expecting it will work for you. Maybe Guru X does have a 25% CTR and maybe Guru Z makes $15,000 a month from AdSense alone, but it’s not practical to follow their advice without testing.

Another major reason you should never follow advice blindly is the fact that some advice is just dangerous. Just because someone is considered an AdSense expert doesn’t mean their advice will always be the right advice, especially when it comes to things that could get you banned.

For example, Joel Comm is widely considered to be one of the world’s experts on AdSense. He put out an eBook about it that was very successful, and then he released a print book called “The AdSense Code” which became quite popular.

Some of the tactics in the book became outdated very quickly. For example, Joel advocated certain tactics for drawing attention to ads that Google later said they didn’t like. This wasn’t Joel’s fault, and the information was great at the time, but anyone blindly following this advice now would be at risk for having their account banned.

Since the AdSense TOS can change at any time, you should always be sure to check out any advice you’re given thoroughly. Read the terms regularly, keep an eye on the official Google AdSense blog, and be very careful to ensure you’re always following the rules.

If you have any questions about a particular tactic and whether or not Google would find it acceptable, you can always just contact them and ask. They would be happy to let you know whether a tactic is acceptable.

Just remember, do NOT put an example live on the web. Some Google reps are rumored to be a bit overzealous, so it’s best to send them a screenshot image and not a live example.

Here is another mistake to avoid at all cost when dealing with Googles Adsense program. You may see this every now and then when doing your research and lookig for the latest in Adsense tips and tricks. It is a fatal mistake when discovered by Google and is clearly outlined on their site.

Sharing Information About Your Statistics

This is a big mistake that I see far too many people making, and it has the potential to get you banned from AdSense permanently. You’ve probably seen this yourself, and maybe you’ve even done it.

This isn’t exactly common sense. It requires you to read the AdSense TOS carefully to even realize this isn’t allowed. Most people wouldn’t think twice about being able to discuss their statistics with other webmasters. But for some reason, AdSense disallows this.

From the current Google AdSense TOS:

Confidentiality. You agree not to disclose Google Confidential Information without Google’s prior written consent. “Google Confidential Information” includes without limitation: (a) all Google software, technology, programming, specifications, materials, guidelines and documentation relating to the Program; (b) click-through rates or other statistics relating to Property performance in the Program provided to You by Google; and (c) any other information designated in writing by Google as “Confidential” or an equivalent designation.

However, You may accurately disclose the amount of Google’s gross payments to You pursuant to the Program. Google Confidential Information does not include information that has become publicly known through no breach by You or Google, or information that has been (i) independently developed without access to Google Confidential Information, as evidenced in writing; (ii) rightfully received by You from a third party; or (iii) required to be disclosed by law or by a governmental authority.

As you can see, Google does not allow you to disclose any information about your CTR, but you are allowed to discuss your gross payments. Basically, you can reveal your number of impressions, and how much you were paid. You can’t discuss anything related to your CTR.

If you must discuss your CTR with others, you should discuss it in terms of saying things like, “My CTR is well under double digits, and I’m seeking to improve it.” Don’t give exact numbers or ranges. You don’t want to risk your account, and the AdSense rules aren’t terribly clear about what you can and can’t discuss.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Your traffic statistics are your own, so you can discuss impressions. The amount you are paid is specifically allowed to be discussed in the terms. Anything else should be considered off limits just to be on the safe side.

Dont make a mistake that could get your Adsense account (and the money in it) deleted!

AdSense ads can be text, image or video. They are content related, which means Google uses a special system to ensure that the ads placed on your website are related to the content on your site. This allows you to have AdSense ads that will be of interest to people visiting your website. Google AdSense works best on a content loaded website. to build a good website. A website alone, though, is not going to help you make some good money with AdSense…..

In addition to my regular Mon-Fri, I also have a Part Time job. I have a few websites online that provide me with a few extra bucks every month. I could probably quit my day job and concentrate on the online stuff and do just fine, but why? I’d ratther have the freedom to experiment online, as well has the overall combined income and the knowledge that I do not need to rely on either source completely. Somehow even though I have a Mon-Fri, I still have freedom. Do my boss and coworkers really need to know that rather than work on the report that is due at 9am, I spent the afternoon by the pool. The report still gets done, I just do it on my schedule whenever I felt like it. It was ready to go at 9am. After all that was the actual expectation, get the report done by 9am. There was no expectation that I do it at a certain time just that I delivered as requested.

I was not always this pleased with my progress. I had hopes of overnight riches and instant cash. I thought I could put up a really great page and that would be it, within at least a week I would be making money. People would just know where I was, what my Internet address was and how thorough my site was on the particular niche that I was focused on. How couldn’t they, I thought, “look at this site, it covers everything and I worked on it for weeks before even going live, how could they not automatically know about it.”

Well I think we both know that this was not reality at all. I had fooled myself into falling for get rich quick, i was looking for a lazy solution, one where I didn’t need to do anything. There is no such thing when you are starting out. Sure that can be a goal as you grow you can outsource parts of the work and eventually only have to spend a couple hours a week to oversee progress, but this NEVER happens overnight. If you were to follow my tips and tricks you have the ability to grow a successful online business but not overnight and not without hard work, research and planning on your part. It is always important to esatablish multiple sources of income, they don’t have to all be making thousands a day but when you add them up together you will see what a reward it is. This way even if what is hot today and was making you money, isn’t hot tomorrow, you still have other streams of income to rely on to get you thru to the next streak and trend.

When I first thought about trying to make money online I bought into every promise and often bought the same thing several times. Dont get me wrong, I didn’t know I was buying the same thing more than once as each purchase was from different websites ( I should have let them know, but I didn’t, I just got my refund and went on my way). Turns out this is not very uncommon unfortunately and that sucks. People just regurgitating info at some one elses expense. I hope to update my Ebook quarterly with new info, because things change so rapidly on the internet. whats working today may not be the same as what works tomorrow. Trends come and go, so you have to be aware of this and plan accordingy. Thats the only way you are going to make it nowadays. Makes me think of the Boy Scouts Moto: Be Prepared. Really, it couldn’t be more appropriate nowadays!

I am sure that many of you out there have who are working from home or thinking about it are concerned about structure. I was when I began, and that was my first mistake.

When I thought about structure I pictured the exact same type of structure that I had at the office, only transposing it to my home. Why?? Because I didn’t know any better.

Structure when working from home takes on a whole new meaning. It does NOT mean that I need to lock myself away from my family, friends, tv, wii (LOL) etc. These things are all a part of my home, and I will not ignore them just because I am “working” I have 24 hours in a day that I can work, If I want to work for a couple hours here, and a couple hours later I do. If my brother stops in, and I don’t have a looming deadline or prescheduled call, then my focus is on him, not work.

My commitment to my company, wether they realize this or not, is to meet their deadlines, be on their conference calls, and to be “available” between 6am-230pm Mon-Fri. They will stil contact me outside of these hours but it is the guideline we use. The work gets assigned and the dealines committed to during this time. But..I also go shopping, visit friends, make lunch for my partner etc etc during that same time. Its a new way of working and therfore working needs a new definition for me, one that is different from the office definition.

So here is what I came up with: working; the act of making income based upon a preset definition of responsibilities. Thats it, nothing more nothing less. It doesnt say I need to actually work during 6-230, it doesn’t say I can stop and visit with my Mom for an hour, it doesn’t say any of that. I beleive that this will be the wave of the future. Soon it will be the norm to work from home and only a few will actually have to leave to go to work, and those will mainly be “service” employees.
